The city of Vista was founded in 1882. It was originally named Frazee Town after one of its first settlers, Clyde Frazee. The name was changed to Vista, meaning "view" in Spanish, in 1913.
Vista was mainly an agricultural community until the 1950s when suburbs started developing. More residential areas and shopping centers were constructed in Vista during the 1970s and 1980s.
