History

Vallejo was founded in 1851, named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, an early Californian statesman. It served as California’s first capital city from 1852-1853 before eventually moving to Sacramento.

The Mare Island Naval Shipyard opened in 1854, fueling Vallejo’s early development. It was a major naval base for over 100 years through wars and economic shifts.
