History

Early history

The county was established in 1885 and named after the Val Verde battlefield in the Civil War. Del Rio was founded that year and quickly became the county seat.

20th century

The economy was driven by agriculture and ranching early on. In the 1950s, Laughlin Air Force Base opened, bringing growth.

The economy relies heavily on Laughlin Air Force Base, which provides thousands of jobs.

Tourism

Lake Amistad National Recreation Area attracts many visitors for fishing, boating, and camping. Del Rio sees lots of cross-border shoppers from Mexico.
