History
Early history
Tom Green County was established in 1874 and named after Confederate general Tom Green. San Angelo designated the county seat in 1884.
20th century
The economy was initially ranching and farming based. It diversified in the 1900s with oil discoveries and opening of Goodfellow Air Force Base.
