The city was created 291 years ago in 1732.
Savannah is a coastal city located along the Savannah River in eastern Georgia. With a population of over 143,000, it is the oldest city in Georgia and the state’s fifth-largest city.
History
Savannah was established in 1733 by British colonists led by James Oglethorpe and was Georgia’s first colonial capital. Laid out in a grid pattern of wooded squares and parks, Savannah became an important colonial port.
Key events in Savannah’s history include the American Revolution and Civil War when the city served as a strategic port. Savannah later became a hub for the cotton and textiles trade.
