Rome is a city located in the county of Floyd in the U.S. state of Georgia. Its population at the 2010 census was 36,303 and a population density of 431 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 36,764 inhabitants.
The city was created 190 years ago in 1833.
Rome is a city in Floyd County, Georgia, United States, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the principal city of the Rome, Georgia, metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Floyd County. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 37,713.
Rome was founded in 1834 at an important crossing-point on the Flint River. It was named after Rome, New York. It was incorporated as a town in 1836 and as a city in 1916.
The Georgia General Assembly legally recognized a formalized governmental structure for Rome that included its first mayor, councilmen and other public offices. The city is governed by a mayor–council system with all municipal elections held every four years on even-numbered years.
Rome's economy is largely dependent on government and health care sectors. The area is known for its low cost of living, especially housing costs and is often listed as one of the best places to retire or relocate to in the country due to its affordability and quality lifestyle options.
Rome has recently seen significant growth in its population base due in part to its proximity to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Interstate 20/75 (I-20).
