New Rochelle is a city in Westchester County, New York, United States, in the southeastern portion of the state. In 2020, the city had a population of 79,726, making it the seventh-largest in the state of New York. Some residents refer to the city as New Rock or New Rock City.

The name "New Rochelle" was selected to honor the memory of Theophilus Eaton, an early Puritan settler in Connecticut and one of its founders, who also founded New Haven Colony in 1638. In 1876 a gold rush began when gold was found in nearby Harrison's Pit by a group of miners from Ohio who were looking for iron ore under what was then known as "Waverly Heights." Some sixty years later on January 19th 1950 James Cagney would film his first movie ever here called "The City That Never Sleeps".

The area was first settled by immigrants from England and Scotland on July 4, 1683. It was part of Westchester County for over 200 years before becoming part of New York City's consolidated city-county in 1898. In the 19th century and early 20th centuries, New Rochelle's downtown area developed into one of those places where significant numbers of artists and intellectuals congregated. The city is home to many historic sites and buildings from that time period (e.g., Oakwood Cemetery).

New Rochelle was founded by Sir Robert Hunter in 1688 along with his brother George as an English settlement on land purchased from Weckquaeskeck Indians and formally owned by James Farret (and his sister Mary Farret). In 1694–1695 Hunter built Fort Putnam at what is today known as Hunters Island and Queen's Bridge (originally called Hunter's Bridge) at the site where the Huguenot.

The city has been home to several major industries including shipbuilding, ironworks and manufacturing. It's also known for its role in developing new technologies such as motion pictures and audio recording equipment during early industrialization periods between 1880s-1920s; which later became known as "Silent Cinema."

The city has 2 major parks: Huguenot Park located near Mount Pleasant and Lake Isle with walking trails throughout; Belmont Lake State Park which features hiking trails, horseback riding trails and camping facilities near Croton Reservoir.
