Morgan City is a city located in the county of Saint Mary Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Its population at the 2010 census was 12,404 and a population density of 1,985 people per km². After 9 years in 2019 city had an estimated population of 10,742 inhabitants.

Morgan City is a small city in St. Mary and lower St. Martin parishes in the U.S. State of Louisiana. The population was 12,404 at the 2010 census, a decrease of 180 from the 2000 tabulation of 12,584. It is part of the Morgan City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes St. Mary and St. Martin parishes.

Morgan City is located at 29°46′4″N 91°44′11″W / 29.76889°N 91.71167°W / 29.76889; -91.71167 (29.768896, -91.711675). It sits on a narrow strip of land wedged between Lake Charles and Vermilion Bay rivers, where they join to form the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway near their confluence with the Atchafalaya River in Terrebonne Parish to the east-southeast at Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

Morgan City is located 27 miles (43 km) northwest of Baton Rouge and 80 miles (130 km) southwest of New Orleans on US 90 and LA 1 between Lafayette and Lake Charles along US 90 and LA 1/LA 70 between.

The city's economy is largely based on petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing (Chevron Phillips Chemical Company). It also operates as a major port for barge traffic along the Mississippi River all the way up to Baton Rouge, where it connects with rail lines leading up into Canada and down into Texas.

Morgan City has been home to many notable figures such as jazz musician Louis Armstrong who was born there in 1901; football player Ozzie Newsome who was raised there from age 8; football player Ed Reed who played at McNeese State University in nearby Lake Charles; and former NBA player John "Hot Rod" Williams who played for McNeese State University as well as for ten years in the NBA with several teams including Chicago Bulls.
