History of Midland County

Midland County was created in 1885 from Tom Green County and was named for the town of Midland. Midland began as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway and quickly became a center for ranching. In the 1920s, oil was discovered in the Permian Basin which transformed Midland into an oil boomtown.
