Ironville is an unincorporated community located along the Red River in Powel County, Kentucky. It was founded in around 1837 as an iron and timber production center.
The community was named for the nearby iron furnaces and mills that utilized the region's natural iron ore, timber and water resources. For several decades, iron production drove the local economy.
However, as iron production declined in the late 1800s, Ironville transitioned to a primarily agricultural economy up through the mid-1900s. Today, not much industry remains in this small town.
