The city was created 216 years ago in 1807.
Greensboro, NC has a rich history. The city was founded in 1808 and originally called Greensborough. It was named after Major General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero.
Greensboro played an important role in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. In 1960, four African American students from North Carolina A&T State University started the Greensboro Sit-Ins at the segregated Woolworth's lunch counter downtown. This non-violent protest was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement.
