Clarksville is a city situated along the Cumberland River in northwest Tennessee. With over 160,000 residents, it’s the fifth-largest city in Tennessee. Clarksville is located about 40 miles northwest of Nashville.
History
The area was first settled by European Americans in the late 18th century. In 1785, settlers established the town of Clarksville, named after General George Rogers Clark. Early growth was fueled by tobacco farming and the Cumberland River location.
Clarksville was officially incorporated as a city in 1819. During the Civil War, the city was a strategic Confederate stronghold until being taken by Union forces in 1862.
Importance of Fort Campbell
In 1942, the U.S. Army established Fort Campbell on the Tennessee-Kentucky border near Clarksville. Today, the massive 101,000 acre base is home to the 101st Airborne Division.
