Ceres is a city in Stanislaus County, California. Its population was 49,302 at the 2020 U.S. Census, up from 45,417 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It is part of the Modesto metropolitan statistical area. Ceres is located in California's Central Valley about 25 miles north of Modesto and 5 miles west of Turlock with a population of about 50,000 people (and growing). Ceres has been designated as an All-America City twice: once in 2001 and again in 2017 by the National Civic League.
Ceres is located at 28 m above sea level and has a total area of 24.22 km² (9 sq mi). The city is located between Riverdale and Rackerby on CA-99 and to the west of Modesto.
It is named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres (Greek Παρθένος, Parthenos). The city of Ceres was founded on April 4, 1872; before then most of its land was used for grazing cattle and other livestock by settlers from Peoria who arrived in the mid-19th century to grow grain and fruit trees; they also raised sheep and pigs there.
Ceres is famous for being one of the first towns to host a post office; it is also known as "The Navel Orange Capital" due to its citrus production. In 1876 Peter Tabor won an election to become a trustee for what would be called Ceres City;
